The Downside to Owning Property In BC

British Columbia is one of the best places in the world to live, never mind just in Canada. There is incredible scenery, a great sense of community in the towns and cities there, some of the best schools and educational institutions, as well as a host of cultural activities and fantastic restaurants. Deciding to settle in British Columbia and owning a property there is a very good move indeed. However, there is one negative thing when it comes to property ownership in British Columbia and that is underground oil tanks.

Underground oil tanks are exactly what they sound like – oil tanks that have been buried. Why would there be an underground oil tank on somebody’s property? Well, this is more common than one might think. Oil was the most common form of fuel in British Columbia in the early part of the twentieth century, but was overtaken by natural gas in the 1950s. When natural gas became the main source of energy, the oil tanks were buried underground.

Why is this a problem for property owners? Well, oil tank removal is a legal requirement by property owners. Oil tank removal is necessary, as even though the tanks are empty, there might be some residual oil in them that can contaminate the environment around them. Although oil tank removal can be an annoyance, when you go with the right company it can be a simple procedure. Professionals carrying out oil tank removal will do it in a way that is not disruptive and will take the oil tank from the premises and recycle the parts in an environmentally conscious manner. Oil tank removal only needs to be done once, so although it is a small downside to owning a property if there is one on it, it can easily be remedied.
