Soil Remediation

Soil Remediation

What is soil remediation?

Soil remediation is the process of cleaning up and restoring contaminated soil. Contaminated soil can be caused by a variety of factors, including industrial accidents, leaks from underground storage tanks, and the improper disposal of hazardous materials. Soil remediation typically involves the removal of contaminated soil and the replacement of it with clean soil.

At West Coast Tank Removal, we effectively handles the cleaning up of materials affected by leaking oil tanks, while following BC’s laws and regulations for contaminated sites and meeting the urgent needs of our clients. The damage to underground storage tanks typically begins with small holes in the metal that grow larger over time. Even if the tank is emptied and left in place, there is often a significant amount of sludge remaining on the bottom interior. Groundwater can then enter the tank through these holes, and as the metal continues to corrode, the sludge and groundwater can leak into the surrounding soil, causing contamination.

Cracks or tears in the exterior of a tank can allow groundwater to seep in and wash contaminants out of the tank and into the surrounding soil, leading to contamination. Over time, the tank will deteriorate as the metal corrodes and rusts, creating holes. This process cannot be prevented. Factors such as moisture in the soil, pH balance, backfill material, and tank location, thickness, age and initial damage can all affect the rate at which a tank rusts. Even a small hole can cause a slow leak of oil into the soil, which may require cleaning. It is best to remove the tanks before a leak occurs.

If you suspect or have been told that a tank may have potentially ruptured, give us a call today for an assessment. Our crew will come on-site and do an inspection and provide you with a quote.
