What Are The Visual Signs Of An Oil Tank?
It is not uncommon for various visual warning signs of a potential buried Oil Tank have been removed in the past. This can be due to various reasons such as:
- Lawn Maintenance
- Aesthetic Purposes
- Renovations
- Concealing the underground Oil Tank
Signs that an oil tank may be present on a property include the inspection and noticeable activities surrounding it;
- FEEDER LINES : also known as supply lines, transport fuel oil from the tank to the burner. They are usually made of copper. Underground Oil Tanks typically have two feeder lines while Above-ground tanks usually have one. The feeder lines are usually buried underground and can be hard to spot. They are commonly found near the furnace or foundation wall. Sometimes, they are removed during renovations or when the house is converted to natural gas. Signs of feeder line removal include crimped lines near the furnace or foundation walls and replaced concrete leading from the furnace to the foundation wall.
- VENT PIPE : this pipe was used to release excess fumes from the interior of the oil tank and allows air to flow into the tank to aid in the conveyance of fuel oil to the burner through the feeder lines. The vent pipe is usually attached to the house vertically and slopes away from the filler pipe. It is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and has an open cap on top
- OIL BURNER SWITCH : is a switch that cuts the fuel oil supply to the tank in case of emergency. It is often found in the basement or near the furnace room and is labeled as “emergency oil shut-off.”
- FILL PIPE : is a pipe used to fill underground storage tanks with oil. They are typically 2-3/4 inches in diameter and located 6 to 8 feet from the main structure.
